Diamondbacks 3B Jose Fernandez becomes 7th MLB player since 1900 with 2 homers in debut

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Jose Fernandez strode to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning during his first big league game in a pressure-packed spot against four-time All-Star closer Kenley Jansen.

The three-run homer that followed capped one of the most powerful MLB regular-season debuts in modern history.

The Venezuelan became just the seventh player since 1900 to hit two homers in his debut, and the second was a go-ahead shot thatled the Diamondbacks over the Detroit Tigers 7-5on Tuesday night.

"I returned to my days as a kid — just a dream come true," a smiling Fernandez said through an interpreter.

In a strange twist, two of the seven two-homer debuts have occurred over the past six days. Cleveland phenom Chase DeLauterwent deep twice in his first career regular-season gamelast Thursday after making his MLB debut in the playoffs last season.

The 22-year-old Fernandez wasn't on the D-backs' opening-day roster, joining the team on Monday after Pavin Smith went on the 10-day injured list with left elbow soreness. He made the most of his first opportunity, finishing with three hits and four RBIs.

Not bad for a guy ranked as the No. 27 prospect in the organization, according to MLB.com

"He deserves all this credit," manager Torey Lovullo said. "We're so proud of him. He's a player who came through our system, through our academy, and it's a great story, a great baseball story. We've known about Jose for a long time. We knew he was coming."

Fernandez hit an infield single in his first big league at-bat and added a solo homer his next time up. The three-run drive that followed put him in elite company, joining DeLauter, Trevor Story (2016), J.P. Arencibia (2010), Mark Quinn (1999), Bert Campaneris (1964) and Bob Nieman (1951) as players with two-homer debuts.

"Stay calm, keep the emotions in check, I knew something like that could happen," Fernandez said. "Just look for a pitch."

The league is continuing its efforts to refine the play by tweaking its kickoff rule ahead of the 2026 NFL season.

The most notable approved rule change will allow teams to attempt an onside kick at any point during the game. In 2025, teams were only allowed to try an onside kick when trailing, so the rule change will give clubs a bit more flexibility.

Despite this significant change, NFL teams will still have to declare an onside kick any time they attempt one. This is necessitated by the difference of alignment between the onside kick – which uses the NFL's traditional kickoff formation – and the NFL's dynamic kickoff, where a majority of the players from each team are lined up between the receiving team's 30- and 35-yard line.

With that in mind, surprise onside kicks – like the one Sean Payton famously dialed up to start the second half of the New Orleans Saints' Super Bowl 44 win over the Indianapolis Colts – will remain out of the sport.

It remains unclear whether the NFL's rule change will result in an uptick in overall onside kick attempts, or if the need to declare them – along with their overall lack of efficacy – will continue to limit their use.

Just five of the NFL's 52 onside kicks were recovered in 2025, according todata from The Football Database. That was good for a mark of 9.6% and up from three total recoveries and a 6% recovery rate in 2024, the first year of the NFL's dynamic kickoff.

NFL kickoff rule changes

The onside kick rule isn't the only major kicking change the NFL's competition committee has instituted for the 2026 season. The following two rules have also been approved:

• To eliminate the kicking team's incentive to intentionally kick the ball out of bounds when kicking off from the 50-yard line.

• To modify the kickoff alignment requirements for the receiving team players in the setup zone.

The first of these rule changes effectively closed a loophole in the 2025 kickoff rules. Last season, a team kicking off from the 50-yard line after a personal foul penalty on the receiving team would benefit more from kicking a ball out of bounds (which would place the ball on the receiving team's 25-yard line) than they would from kicking a touchback (which would place the ball at the 30-yard line).

Under the NFL's new rule, touchbacks on kicks from the 50-yard line will be brought back out to the 20, eliminating the incentive to purposely sail a ball out of bounds.

Meanwhile, the alignment modifications will simply adjust how receiving team players are allowed to line up within the setup zone. The new rule will require just five players, instead of six, to have their front foot on the setup line – though just two players will be allowed to have their foot off the line in each of the setup zone's three areas.

"We've shown up for each other as friends over the years, through all the highs and lows, and what's developed recently was the last thing either of us expected," they continued. After Cohen referenced Miller's response, Hamm jumped in to repeat it, "I've been better," prompting audible reactions from the audience.

"I was like, 'Well, it's about to get a lot better. I'm here!'" he joked.

When asked for his thoughts, Hamm added, "Team Ciara, for sure, tricky manifestations of behavior there. I'm not so sure how you mentally do the flip flops that are required to make that make sense in your head."

Dan Hurley downplays headbutting ref after UConn's win vs. Duke: 'Thought he was coming over to chest-bump me'

On the court, UConn coach Dan Hurley is an emotional and animated guy. But some fans thought Hurley took things too far followingUConn's last-second winover Duke in the Elite Eight.

Following Braylon Mullins' buzzer-beat toput UConn up 73-72with just 0.3 seconds left, cameras captured a weird exchange between Hurley and official Roger Ayers. In the clip, Hurley appeared to get in Ayers' face, with both men butting heads on the sideline.

After seeing the exchange, some wondered why Hurley was not charged with a technical foul, as making contact with an official can lead to both a penalty and ejection for coaches. Hurley, who wasejected from a loss vs. Marquette earlier in the seasonafter making contact with an official, was certainly aware that was the case.

But Hurley said everyone who has seen the clip has it all wrong. As the coach explained during an appearance on "The Triple Option" podcast, he believed Ayers was going in for a chest-bump, which resulted in the strange interaction.

Hurley's full comments read:

"Really, at that point in the game we had it won, and he's such an easy guy to work with during the game, I thought he was coming over to chest-bump me and celebrate the shot. It's not like that for me with him. My experience with him has been, we haven't won every game. I haven't agreed with every call. So that was in no way me going at a ref like I've been at their throat the whole game. There were other points in the game where I had my arm around him walking out of a timeout. We were cracking jokes and laughing."

At that point, Hurley said it wasn't like the situation at Marquette, where he implied he deserved to be penalized for his actions. He then turned the conversation back to the Duke game, saying he was being carried by the "emotion of the shot" during his moment with Ayers. When asked if they were sharing that moment, Hurley clarified that Ayers was coming up to inform Hurley that there was still some time left on the clock.

Given the narrow margin of victory, a technical foul on Hurley in that moment could have been catastrophic for UConn. That, obviously, didn't happen and UConn advanced to the Final Four, where it will take on Illinois on Saturday.

While Hurley will move on to the Final Four, Ayers won't be able to say the same. Despite being a veteran official with multiple years of Final Four experience under his belt, Ayers wasnot chosen to workthe Final Four. It's unclear whether his interaction with Hurley played a role in that decision.

Men's NCAA tournament averaging 10.3 million viewers, its most-watched since 1993

NEW YORK (AP) — The men's NCAA tournament is averaging 10.3 million viewers through the Elite Eight, according to Nielsen. That is the tournament's best audience since 1993 and a 9% increase over last year.

UConn's last-second 73-72 victory over Dukein the East Region final averaged 13.4 million on CBS. The audience peaked at 18.9 million when Braylon Mullinssank a desperation 3-pointerwith 0.4 seconds left.

Friday's early window with Duke-St.John's on CBS and Michigan-Alabama on TBS/truTV averaged 14.2 million, the most-watched Friday regional early window since 1992.

The Final Four and title game will be on TBS, TNT and truTV.

The women's NCAA tournament on ESPN's networks and ABC is averaging 789,000 viewers through Saturday's Sweet 16 games. That is a 1% decrease from last year.

Ratings for Sunday and Monday's regional finals are expected to be available on Wednesday.

Tiger Woods pleads not guilty, is stepping away to seek treatment

Tiger Woods released his first public statement since his rollover crash on Friday, announcing he would step away from golf to seek treatment in hopes of "lasting recovery."

Woods' statement Tuesday came soon after his attorney entered a plea of not guilty in a Florida court to charges stemming from the accident.

Woods, 50, is charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence with property damage, and refusal to submit to a urinalysis, according to court documents.

"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," Woods' statement read. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

"Tiger Woods is a legend of our sport whose impact extends far beyond his achievements on the course," the PGA Tour said in statement. "But above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being. Tiger continues to have our full support as he takes this important step."

Attorney Douglas Duncan represented Woods, who was not present in Martin County Circuit Court in Stuart, Fla. Duncan submitted the plea as well as the demand for a jury trial.

The 15-time major champion waived his arraignment hearing that was slated for April 23. The defense has 10 days to file motions in the case, to be heard in Florida's 19th Judicial Circuit.

Woods told police he was looking at his cellphone and changing the radio station before his Land Rover crashed near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla., according to the arrest affidavit released on Tuesday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Woods said he didn't see a truck that was hauling a trailer slow down, per the affidavit, and his car clipped the trailer and rolled onto its side.

The golfer was jailed on a charge of suspicion of misdemeanor DUI with property damage following the accident and was released on a $1,000 bond about eight hours later.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said a breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol, but that Woods refused a urinalysis test for other drugs.

Woods was "sweating profusely" and his movements were "lethargic and slow" during an interview with sheriff's deputy Tatiana Levenar, she wrote in the arrest affidavit.

Another deputy "observed several signs of impairment and requested I conduct a DUI Investigation to ensure Woods was able to operate the motor vehicle in a safe manner at the time of the collision," Levenar wrote in the affidavit.

During the field sobriety exercises, the deputy wrote that Woods was "limping and stumbling to the right." Woods told the deputy he had undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 operations on his right leg since a major car accident near Los Angeles in 2021.

Duncan also represented Woods in that case. Woods, arrested on suspicion of DUI, later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and agreed to enter a diversion program.

Woods had said in the 2021 incident that he had taken a bad mix of painkillers. In the Martin County arrest report from last week, Woods denied consuming any alcohol but said he had taken "a few" prescription pills that morning.

Names of the medications were redacted in the affidavit, however, another Martin County Sheriff's deputy found two hydrocodone pills in Woods' left pants pocket. Hydrocodone was found in Woods' system in his 2017 arrest.

Levenar noted in the report that Woods' eyes were "bloodshot and glassy" and his pupils were "extremely dilated."

"Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed his normal facilities were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle," Levenar wrote.

The U.S. Army had previously suspended the Apache helicopter pilots who flew directly aboveKid Rock's home in the Nashville area during March 28's "No Kings" protests.

"The Army has confirmed that on March 28, two Apache helicopters from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell conducted a flight in the Nashville area that has attracted public and media attention," Army Spokesman Maj Montrell Russell told PEOPLE in a statement.

Russell confirmed the incident was under an "Army Regulation 15-6 administrative investigation."

"The personnel involved have been suspended from flight duties while the Army reviews the circumstances surrounding the mission, including compliance with relevant FAA regulations, aviation safety protocol, and approval requirements," Russell said.

"The Army takes any allegations of unauthorized or unsafe flight operations very seriously and is committed to enforcing standards and holding personnel accountable," the statement concluded.

Shortly after the Army confirmed the pilots' suspensions, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reposted Kid Rock's video of the helicopter onXon Tuesday, March 31.

Jaguars to play home games in 2027 at Orlando's Camping World Stadium

The Jaguars will play most of their 2027 home games in Orlando after NFL owners rubber-stamped a proposal Tuesday that has been years in the making and essentially a done deal for months.

Owners voted unanimously at the league's annual meetings in Arizona to allow the team to temporary relocate next year's home slate during the final stages of a $1.4 billion stadium renovation.

Jacksonville started searching for a home away from home when it unveiled plans for a "stadium of the future" in 2023.

The Jags considered playing at Daytona International Speedway, at Florida Field in Gainesville and at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Camping World was always the front-runner. And it became a no-brainer when Orlando leaders cleared a $10 million sports-incentive package to help land the Jaguars earlier this year. The aging stadium also is undergoing a $400 million facelift — a project that will give the venue a modernized, NFL-friendly infrastructure.

"I look at it as an exciting opportunity," Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said. "You have a chance to breach a region of the state that you otherwise wouldn't have the luxury of doing."

The Jaguars are scheduled to play 10 home games in 2027, including a preseason exhibition. But not all of those will be played in Orlando; Jacksonville can play up to three home games in London that season.

So Orlando is likely to land seven or eight NFL games, including in-state matchups featuring Tampa Bay at Jacksonville and Miami at Jacksonville.

The Jaguars announced plans in February to play consecutive home games in London this fall, with ongoing construction reducing capacity at EverBank Stadium to 42,507 for the 2026 season.

The timing is far from ideal. The Jaguars are coming off a 13-4 season in which they won the AFC South in the first year of a new regime that features Gladstone and coach Liam Coen. Now, they essentially have to go two years without much of a home-field advantage.

"Hard for me to comment that far into the future," Coen said. "I can't go there. The only thing I can say is that I've been there. I coached there when I was at Kentucky; we coached at Camping World.

"I think it will be a cool thing because your average football fan is in Disney a lot. And so I do think it could be a way to connect with a new fan base. Are there going to be challenges and stressors and things that we have to work through? Absolutely. But I do think generally for our brand and for Jacksonville Jaguars football, I don't think it's going to kill us."

For Orlando, hosting the Jaguars — even as a one-year rental — provides the city a chance to showcase its capabilities. After all, Orlando is the largest U.S. media market without an NFL team and has the infrastructure (major airport, hotels, restaurants, nightlife) to handle big events.

Ryan Seacrest has come clean about whether or not he uses Tinder.

• The Wheel of Fortune host joked about finding love on the app during a recent episode that featured couples.

• Seacrest previously dated model Aubrey Paige, chef Shayna Taylor, and Dancing With the Stars host Julianne Hough.

The multihyphenate host revealed that despite his recent comment onWheel of Fortune, Seacrest is not on the dating app. In a clip fromOn Air With Ryan Seacrest, he and cohosts Tanya Rad Yadegar and Sisanie Villaclara discussed how hisjoke during a love-themed episode of the game showspiraled into a media frenzy.

"Apparently you're on Tinder," Yadegar said to Seacrest at the start of the clip.

"No, I'm not on Tinder. Why is anybody — people keep asking if I'm on Tinder," he replied, learning that speculation was "all over the internet."

"Well, I'm not. I think I made a joke," he clarified. Villaclara told him to "be careful" about what he says, "because someone ran with it."

Villaclara and Yadegar then read headlines that spawned from his Tinder joke, calling him "lonely."

"Ryan Seacrest admits he's lonely as he interruptsWheel of Fortunewith Tinder update," Yadegar said, reading one headline that came from his throwaway comment. "Well, I mean, that's not what happened at all," Seacrest protested as she listed a few more articles.

"Okay, fine. Got it. Well, I'm not on Tinder, but anyway, I said it jokingly," he concluded.

Weeks prior, during a love-centric episode ofWheel of Fortune, participating couples ranged from newlyweds to folks married for decades. While the couples spun the wheel and participated in "Love Is in the Air"-themed games, Seacrest joked about his relationship status.

"I am so lonely up here," he quipped, pointing out that he was the only single person on stage at one moment during the show.

Later, cohostVanna WhitecalledWheel of Fortune"a lovable show."

"I know. I love 'Love Is in the Air.' I am so excited to watch all of these shows," Seacrest said before mentioning the popular dating app. "I'll be on Tinder tonight so I can find it."

"Love will be in the air next time," White, whomarried longtime partner John Donaldsonin January, replied. "I promise."

Seacrest previously dated model Aubrey Paige, chef Shayna Taylor, andDancing With the StarshostJulianne Hough.

In 2017 while cohostingLive With Kelly and Ryan, Seacrest admitted that he liked "the idea of marriage." He also revealed that he was "close" to proposing during a romantic relationship but didn't. "And it was the right move," he noted.

Before it became one of the most beloved love songs of the 1960s,Brian Wilson's 1964 classic was born from a quiet, comforting moment that sparked its timeless romance.

"Don't Worry Baby" came after Wilson faced a frustrating day in the recording studio. He was comforted by his then-girlfriendMarilyn Rovell, perAmerican Songwriter.

The publication quoted Wilson's memoir,Wouldn't It Be Nice: My Own Story, where Wilson shared that Rovell offered support, saying, "Don't worry, baby, it's going to be great."

The songwriter wrote, "I called lyricistRoger Christianand told him I had an idea. He met me one afternoon at my parents' house, where, in one of our last collaborations, we wrote a lush ballad whose title and chorus came directly from Marilyn's comforting words, 'Don't Worry, Baby.' I knew the song was a smash before we finished writing it."

The song's inspiration came from Wilson's favorite song, "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes. After he wrote "Don't Worry Baby," Wilson reportedly offered the song toPhil Spectorfor the girl group to record. However, Spector wasn't interested in a song he didn't have a hand in writing.

Ronnie Spectorreleased her cover of "Don't Worry Baby" in 1999. The song was included on her EPShe Talks to Rainbows, produced byJoey Ramone. Although the song was originally written for her by Wilson in 1964, she did not officially record it until 35 years later.

Wilson found out that Spector finally recorded the song during a 1999 interview withRodney Bingenheimeron KROQ. His reaction is priceless.

In 2002, the twomusiclegends were reunited ahead of Wilson's concert at The Beacon Theater in New York City. They discussed the song and why its important to both of them.

"You wrote 'Don't Worry Baby' right after we recorded 'Be My Baby,'" Spector said. "That song was supposed to be for me, and Phil [Spector] didn't write it, so he said, 'No way.'"

"Don't Worry Baby" reachedNo. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1964. The song remained on the charts for 10 weeks and became a timeless Beach Boys Classic.

2026 NCAA tournament picks, predictions: Best bets for the Final Four

We saw the definition of March Madness last weekend, whenNo. 2 UConn stunned No. 1 overall seed Duke with a last-second 3-pointer to win 73-72and complete a historic comeback after being down 15 points at halftime.

UConn is a small underdog against No. 3 Illinois in the Final Four, while No. 1 Arizona is a currently a small 'dog against fellow No. 1 seed Michigan in what should be a fantastic matchup between arguably the two best teams in the country.

Below you'll find the favorite wagers for all the games from our college basketball handicappers — Corbie Craig, Matt Jacob and Matt Russell. We'll update this piece throughout the week with more wagers from our experts.

Best bets for Saturday's Final Four games

No. 1 Arizona vs. No. 1 Michigan (-1.5, 157.5)

Jacob:First-half scores in Michigan's last five contests dating to the Big Ten tournament championship game: 38-38, 50-46, 48-39, 49-47 and 48-26. All five surpassed 75 points and all five flew over the first-half total, with the Wolverines putting up an average of 46.2 points.

Meanwhile, in its last eight games dating to the regular-season finale at Colorado, Arizona and its opponents have combined for at least 74 first-half points six times. During this stretch, the Wildcats have averaged 37.1 points in the opening 30 minutes of action.

Translation: Both of these No. 1 seeds love to push the pace, particularly early; both can fill the bucket; and both are extraordinarily efficient on the offensive end. I don't expect anything different in Saturday's Final Four nightcap.

In fact, both teams have already shown in the NCAA tournament what happens when facing an opponent that also loves to sprint up and down the court. In the Sweet 16, Arizona beat Arkansas 109-88 (with the teams combining for 97 first-half points), and Michigan thumped Alabama 90-77 (with 96 of those points scored before halftime).

It might take a beat or two for these squads to get used to shooting in a cavernous football stadium, but they'll eventually heat up and easily top 80 points before the first-half horn sounds.

Bet: First half over 73.5 points (-125)

No. 2 UConn vs. No. 3 Illinois (-1.5, 139.5)

Jacob:Here's a quick recap of Illinois' NCAA tournament performance to date: Four wins, all by double digits; three straight opponents held to fewer than 60 points on 38% shooting; a cumulative plus-65 rebounding advantage; and four starters averaging at least 12 points per contest. Just flat-out, across-the-board domination.

So, of course I'm fading the Illini in the Final Four.

The main reason: At this point, a bet against UConn in the Big Dance is essentially a bet against the sun rising tomorrow.

The Huskies' record in their last 18 NCAA tournament games overall: 17-1 (including 15 double-digit blowouts). Their record in their last 18 tournament games from the Sweet 16 onward: 18-0 (the most recent being Sunday's miraculous Elite Eight comeback against No. 1 overall seed Duke).

Ranking Duke's worst NCAA tournament losses since its last title

Another reason why I'm backing UConn: It already manhandled Illinois once this season, rolling 74-61 as a 3.5-point favorite in Madison Square Garden back on Nov. 28. Remember those four Illini starters averaging double digits in the NCAA tournament? They combined for 18 points on 6-for-27 shooting (including 2-for-13 from 3-point range) against the Huskies.

Granted, Nov. 28 is a long time ago. But early February is not. I bring that up because that's when Illinois lost 85-82 to Michigan State in overtime — the first of four consecutive overtime losses (by a combined 10 points) that Illinois suffered between Feb. 7-March 13.

In fact, since edging Texas Tech 81-77 in their third game of the season Nov. 11, the Illini have played six games decided by fewer than six points. Their record in those six contests: 0-6. In other words, Illinois is untrustworthy in close games.

Well, I fully expect this one to be a 40-minute dogfight. And I fully expect UConn to do what UConn always does this time of year: come out on top — somehow, some way.

Taylor Swift's latest music video may be missing one Taylor but is packed with another.

On March 31, the 14-time Grammy winner dropped the music video for her song "Elizabeth Taylor," the third from herThe Life of a Showgirlalbum. The video is a gorgeous montage of archival red carpet footage of Elizabeth Taylor and snippets from some of her most famous roles includingCat on a Hot Tin RoofandCleopatra.

Film buffs and fans of the screen siren will also recognize moments fromFather of the Bride,A Place in the Sun,Giant,Suddenly, Last Summer,Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, andJulia Misbehaves. Close-ups of her violet eyes and stunning diamond jewelry are sprinkled throughout the clip as well.

The montage of Taylor's movies and red carpet b-roll footage fits in with the lyrics. For example, "All my white diamonds and lovers are forever," zooms into a massive diamond ring, while "In the papers, on the screen and in their minds," cuts to Taylor on a Hollywood date night.

Swift's song plays over the video; however, Swift is nowhere to be seen. Her most recent music videos for"Opalite"and"The Fate of Ophelia"from her albumThe Life of a Showgirlwere much more involved with set designs and choreography.

The supercut focuses mainly on the actress, who was married eight times to seven different men (she wed and divorcedRichard Burtontwice) and died in 2011 at the age of 79.

At the end of the music video, Swift thanks the House of Taylor & Elizabeth Taylor Trust, along with the Todd family and the Wilding family. Taylor was married to Mike Todd and Michael Wilding.

In October, Swift said that she contacted the estate of Taylor to let them know she was writing a song about the two-time Oscar winner, as she lets "real people" know if they're about the be name-dropped in her music. "And if it's Elizabeth Taylor, we go to their family and her estate and let them know and they were lovely about it."

This isn't the first time Swift mentioned Taylor in her songs. On "...Ready For It?," the opening track to her 2017 albumReputation, Swift sings about Taylor and Burton's relationship. "And he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor / Every love I've known in comparison is a failure," she says.

Taylor's sonChristopher Wilding told PEOPLE in October 2025that he thinks the singer and his late mother "seem like kindred spirits." "They are both the very embodiment of female empowerment. The way [Swift] has deftly captured the similarities and parallel tracks in their careers and personal lives is delightful."
